The Eyebetes Foundation, under the capable leadership of Dr Nishant Kumar, has been organising screening camps to raise awareness about the link between diabetes and blindness

There is overwhelming evidence that the burden of diabetes and hypertension is on the rise in India. In fact, the two chronic diseases, euphemistically called high sugar and high BP, coexist in as many as twenty per cent patients. Almost half of the world’s diabetics are Indians, with an estimated 72 million cases in the country, and this number is expected to increase to 134 million.

The Eyebetes Foundation, under the capable leadership of Dr Nishant Kumar, has been working tirelessly to raise awareness about the link between diabetes and blindness, and this year they are conducting one of the largest screening camps in the world at the Siddhivinayak Temple at Prabhadevi during the 11-day Ganpati Utsav.

Dr Kumar says that people lacked awareness, which is a key reason that led him to start these camps. Eyebetes foundation camp camp was started in 2016 at the Lalbaugcha Raja during Ganesh Chaturthi and in 2017 at Siddhivinayak temple during the ten days of the festival, to enrol more people and get free screenings done.

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition which deranges glucose metabolism resulting in increased blood glucose levels. The raised glucose levels in the blood affect almost every part of the body as their predominant effect is on all blood vessels. Increased sugar levels cause damage to the blood vessels causing every blood vessel to either shut down (occlusion) or for the blood vessels to be leaking causing swelling and edema. Most times there is a combination of occlusion and edema due to diabetes.

Dr. Nishant Kumar, Eyebetes Foundation and the District Collectorate of Thane under the guidance of Thane Collector, Mahendra Kalyankar on Sunday (November12) organised a large screening and awareness program for diabetes and blindness at the Town Hall in Thane on Sunday.

Reportedly, 11,000 Mumbaikars’ eyes have been graded by retina experts across world, post the ‘Eyebetes’ campaign at Lalbaugcha Raja, making it a scintillating success. Dr. Nishant Kumar – originator of the cause – is sharply eyeing more such prospects…

The ‘Eyebetes’ campaign at Lalbaugcha Raja checked more than 12,500 pilgrims on Tuesday, out of which about 11,000 eye-test data has already been graded by retina experts around the world. The campaign was carried out by famous ophthalmologist, Dr. Nishant Kumar in order to spread awareness about diabetic blindness. It was organised at Lalbaugcha Raja’s Pandal. The event ended on Tuesday, after receiving an overwhelming response from Mumbaikars.

Every year Hindu devotees rush to Lalbaug during Ganeshotsav to treasure a glance of their favourite elephant god, Lalbaugcha Raja. Well this year, the sight is different. The pandal is occupied by not only Hindu devotees but a few Muslim students as well.

These students of the Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (S.N.D.T) college, Juhu are optometric students rendering free services to the devotees as part of the ‘Eyebetes’ campaign initiated by famous ophthalmologist Dr. Nishant Kumar.

Health and blessings can be acquired together. The ‘Diabetic awareness’ campaign of Dr. Nishant Kumar is receiving an overwhelming response from thousands of Mumbaikars visiting Lalbaugcha Raja everyday. “Till now we have already seen 9,000 people” said Kumar.

Dr. Nishant Kumar is no ordinary doctor. Apart from being the second ophthalmologist in the world to have received a Fulbright Scholarship from the US Senate, Dr. Kumar’s empathy and understanding of his Indian patients has led him to conduct what is to be one of themost ambitious medical projects undertaken in the city during Ganesh Utsav.

The Indian Academy of Diabetes awarded Dr Nishant Kumar with the Indian Academy of Diabetes – Sanofi, Rising Star Award for 2015 at the International Symposium of Diabetes held in Mumbai.

Dr Nishant Kumar is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon who returned to Mumbai in late 2014 after having trained and lived in the UK for the past 14 years. He now works as a Consultant Ophthalmologist with expertise in uveitis and the medical and surgical management of complex diseases affecting the posterior segment (vitreous, retina and macula) at the P D Hinduja Hospital, Mahim and the Hinduja Healthcare Surgical Hospital, Khar.
